A Brisbane man and his two sons who failed to arrive as scheduled in Cairns in far north Queensland are the subject of a police search.

The three left Brisbane last week on a driving holiday.

Steven Van Lonkhuyzen, 37, and his sons Ethan, 7, and Timothy, 5, were last seen leaving their house on Brisbane's bayside in the early hours of last Thursday morning.

Police said Mr Van Lonkhuyzen last called his wife from the town of Miles in Queensland's southern inland the day they left Brisbane.

But the trio had failed to arrive in Cairns two days ago as expected.

They had been planning to stop in Dingo and Charters Towers en route to Cairns and are travelling in a white 1995 Mitsubishi four-wheel drive with the Queensland registration 426 MCZ.

When the car left Brisbane it was also towing a trailer.

Police said they held concerns for the trio's whereabouts as it was out of character for them not to make regular contact with family.

Anyone who has seen them was asked to contact police.
