A family searching for more space to raise its four young children came in over the top of three other buyers to secure a Grovedale house with just one bid.

Newtown couple Muhammad Imran Razzak and Tahira Sultana paid $637,000 for the keys to the four-bedroom house at 7 Sandalwood Court at Saturday’s auction.

The gift of a bigger backyard was an early birthday present for eldest daughter Izzat, who celebrated her ninth birthday on Sunday.

Mrs Sultana said after living in a townhouse, the extra space the 657sq m property afforded would be life-changing

“I loved the house and we were looking for more bedrooms,” she said.

“We are living in Newtown but the kids need more space.”

The updated house with two living zones, two bathrooms, a double garage and double carport was initially listed for private sale.

But Hayeswinckle, Newtown agent Michelle Winckle switched to a short auction campaign after 80 people turned out for the first inspection.

Bidding opened at $580,000 with three bidders in the race until Ms Winckle declared the property on the market at $630,000.

Mr Razzak waited until the final moments to put his hand up and trumped the underbidder by $1000.

Ms Winckle said the house was in one of Grovedale’s best locations, close to Waurn Ponds Creek and shopping centre and with easy access to the Surf Coast.

“This home really ticks a lot of boxes for families for years to come,” she said.
