A woman and her horse who went missing on a camping trip in Victoria's high country have been found safe and well after four nights in the bush, police have said.

Narelle Davies, 52, left her home in Mansfield on Saturday for a weekend of riding around the nearby Howqua Hills.

The alert was raised after she failed to return home on Monday.

She had planned to camp overnight near her car and horse float, which were found at Tunnel Bend — an area where people often camp when they are riding in the mountains.

She was described as an "accomplished horse endurance rider" who is well-known in local horse-riding circles.

Victoria Police said Ms Davies and her horse Depict were found safe and well by search crews about 8:30am.

Senior Sergeant Damian Keegan from Victoria Police said she was checked by doctors after spending four nights in the cold.

"We've had some very cold nights, down [to] -2 to 1 degrees during the nights she's been out there," he said.

"It's very fortunate with her knowledge and experience of the area and riding the area quite a lot, that she had appropriate clothing on which we've probably seen with the good results today.

"I believe she may have had a fall in some stage but the good news is that she's survived quite well."
