THE woman who died from a “brutal” stabbing in Toowoomba yesterday was related to some of the accused group, news.com.au understands.
The group of nine people did not appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court this morning but have been charged over the alleged stabbing death.
Six women and three men, ranging in age from 23 to 34, have each been charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count of enter dwelling with intent.
Bail was denied and the matter was adjourned until tomorrow.
Police allege a 37-year-old woman was found with serious injuries at a Wilsonton address in McGregor Street just after 2pm yesterday.
She was conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived, and was transported to Toowoomba Base Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased.
The Chronicle described the stabbing as “brutal” and said police have been seen searching through rubbish bins near the scene of the crime.
The group were later arrested in the carpark of a nearby fast food restaurant on the Warrego highway.
“Officers are also looking into a car parked in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant nearby, which is believed to be connected,” the publication reported.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service lawyer Kevin Rose told the ABC he was representing five of the nine charged and addressed the possibility of further charged being laid.
“I haven’t been told that, but given that there is one deceased person there is the possibility — that’s what I understand the police are saying,” Mr Rose told the publication.
Police said the following people have each been charged:
• A 32-year-old man from Wilsonton Heights
• A 28-year-old woman from Newtown
• A 29-year-old woman from South Toowoomba
• A 25-year-old man from Wilsonton Heights
• A 34-year-old woman from Harlaxton
• A 29-year-old woman from Roma
• A 29-year-old woman from Kearneys Springs
• A 23-year-old man from Toowoomba
• A 25-year-old woman from Stuart
The group spent the night in Toowoomba Watchhouse and the case was briefly mentioned in court today.
No application for bail was made and the matter was adjourned until tomorrow.
The victim’s family has been notified.
