The toughest challenge she faces is constant change.

“Immigration law, perhaps more than any law, is very reflective of society and, more broadly, the context of the world," she says. She adds that her company sees frequent immigration law changes that may happen daily and apply retrospectively.

Sometimes, she and her colleagues are left in limbo. On one hand, they must comfort their clients, on the other they have to be ready for significant change.

“I guess the unpredictability and the ever-changing nature of immigration is the biggest, the toughest challenge and the biggest battle in our day-to-day work,” she says.

She handles stress by having a series of holidays planned throughout the year. Each gives her something to look forward to – something that makes working hard worthwhile and rewarding.

Day-to-day the University of Technology, Sydney law graduate handles stress by doing yoga and Pilates exercise classes at lunch time.

“So that very much breaks up my day where in the morning I can do prioritisation and low-level tasks, and in the afternoon get to the real, gritty stuff because I'm very much an afternoon and evening peak worker.”

Her success tip is just to love what you do. “It sounds like such a cliché, and it sounds like almost a dream for you to be paid for what you love to do.

“But there can be passion in sometimes the most mundane things. And there will be times where I'm reviewing applications and looking through financial documents to assess a company's financial viability.

“And while I'm not passionate about that task in particular, I look to the bigger picture and say, `Well, this company is now able to source talent from overseas, which is a benefit to not only them and the colleagues within that office but to us as a wider community.’”

That is where her passion lies, she says.

She adds that it is important to be realistic about what one person can achieve. It is important to tell co-workers, managers and partners if a responsibility is overwhelming, concerning or dissatisfying. Also explain what you feel positive about and would like more of, she says.

“So, in terms of being passionate and living a dream, I think communication is the key there because obviously we spend more time at work than we do anywhere else. So it's important that where you spend the majority of life is somewhere where you can be happy and satisfied.”
