According to his fundraising page, he ran his first marathon, the Brathay 2016, after his father entered him into it, and in 2017 again ran the 42-kilometre course in just under 3 hours and 4 minutes.

He received the inaugural Martin Campbell award for fastest local runner, and was invited to run the London Marathon on the charity's behalf.

MasterChef UK released a statement saying Campbell, who competed on the series last year, "will always be remembered for producing some of the most innovative and ground-breaking food that we saw on the series".

London Marathon organisers said he was a well-known chef "inspiring viewers with his Nutritional Gastronomy movement and forward-thinking ideas".

"Everyone involved in the organisation of the London Marathon would like to express our sincere condolences to Matt's family and friends," organisers said in a statement.
