"The night before I was due to leave, I didn't sleep - I was high all night and last injected around 4am. I was due to leave my apartment at 6.30am, to catch a flight leaving for Denpasar at 8.50am," he told the court.

While scrambling to pack, Roberts said, he had decided to pack some drugs to use in Bali as he did not have a dealer in the city.

"I knew this was illegal but as an addict, my only thought was of my next hit...I admit that I brought the drugs to Bali, for which I am very sorry and apologise."

He then outlined details of how his partner Loyd, who had been in Bali with him since the arrest and participated in a drug rehabilitation program with Roberts, had died.

After leaving Bali on a visa run, Roberts said, Loyd met an American drug dealer named Alex in Kuala Lumpur and relapsed into drug use.

"Early Wednesday morning, they injected shabu [methamphetamine] together and Loyd had a stroke. It took Alex until Friday to take Loyd to the hospital, even then, I had to beg him. It was too late. On Sunday Loyd was dead."

"I don't [want] this to happen to my family. Please help me," he begged the judges.

The court is due to hand down its judgement on Roberts's case next Wednesday.

Assessments by Indonesian and Australian doctors have confirmed Mr Roberts was an addict and that he had been a user of multiple narcotics including ice, methamphetamine, cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana since the year 2000.

When admitted to Bhayangkara hospital, he had been diagnosed with mental health and behavioral issues due to the methamphetamines, as well as depression and anxiety disorders.
