But soon after, Kane collapsed, and was rushed to a veterinary clinic in a "serious condition", police say.

A police spokesperson said that Kane had "improved significantly" throughout Sunday.

Both men were arrested taken to hospital for treatment, as one had sustained injuries as a result of the altercation, and the other required treatment due to an "underlying condition", police say.

The 27-year-old was charged with break and enter with intent, entering enclosed lands, resisting arrest, goods in custody and possessing house-breaking implements. He was refused bail and was due to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Sunday.

The 22-year-old man remains in hospital, and is expected to be charged when released.
