JUST south of the city, the busy bayside suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands offers an eclectic mix of longtime neighbourhood favourites and trendy newcomers.

AVOCADO FRUIT LOUNGE

GOING green couldn’t be easier at this self-described fruit lounge. Inside, the space is awash with white and mint colours, giving it the vibe of a tropical summer which is appropriate given so much of the menus is suited for those long hot days.

Inspired by the cold refreshing drinks from his native Lebanon, particularly the avocado based mocktails and fruit blended smoothies in addition to the Sydney brunch crowd’s penchant for smashed avo on toast, experienced cafe manager and co-owner Mouhamed Dabbousi took the leap and opened up this chic spot featuring one of Australia’s favourite fruits (well, technically a berry.)

As you’d expect, avocado makes an appearance throughout the menu, on dishes ranging from the oregano bruschetta to the green bowl topped with granola and fruit.

The signature item though would have to be The Avo Cocktail made with blended avocado, milk, honey and ice. One sip and you’ll be giving this drink the green light.

LE SANDS RESTAURANT

WHETHER you’re looking to add some sizzle to date night or just something different for a weekend lunch, head down to the Brighton-Le-Sands boardwalk for dinner and a show.

For nearly 40 years, Le Sands Restaurant, in its many incantations, has been serving up plates of seafood, pizzas and fine modern Australian fare but owners Peter and Elizabeth Antonopoulos upped the ante when they introduced the popular Flambé trolley.

With a veritable kitchen on wheels, Piero Zocaro pulls up to a table where he preps steaks, seafood and dessert along with a touch of brandy then, with a touch of theatre, sets it alight where the leaping flames perform the grand finale.

BIANCO KITCHEN

SILVER and Gold adorn the walls of this casual cafe with a wood-fire pizza oven and complete dessert kitchen.

They are framed certificates actually, and have been awarded to Bianco for their many prize-winning products including gelato and a myriad of pastas.

Try the gnocchi with a basic Napolitana sauce to get the full flavour and texture of these little pillows of perfection but, as tempting as it may be, save some room fro dessert.

A particular source of pride for owner John Panebianco is the scrumptious pistachio gelato, a smooth nutty flavour that John attributes to the authentic ingredients he imports from Italy.

BRIGHTON KIOSK

FORGET images of shuttered canteen kiosks serving warm sodas, instant coffee and reheated meat pies, this beachside spot serves up real food, real coffee and all within a really cool environment.

Try a big slice of carrot cake and a cuppa for a midmorning reprieve or linger over lunch with the generously sized smoked salmon sandwiches. There is plenty of seating with tables inside, along the boardwalk and on the bleached-wood deck.

So whether you’ve just come off the sand, getting out of the office or tired from pushing the pram, there’s plenty of space and offering to take a break and enjoy the view.

BIANCO RESTAURANT

Right off the main drag, across from Botany Bay and at the foot of the Novotel Hotel, over the past 30 year Bianco Restaurant’s owner John Panebianco has seen a lot of changes, but one thing that has remained throughout, is his insistence on quality.

“People want consistency,” Mr Panebianco says as he describes the ingredients that go into such popular dishes as the Pesce in Acquapazza — seafood in an herbed broth — and Linguine allo scoglio — a shellfish dish made with their award-winning pasta.

Judging by the loyal clientele that not only book in for dinner but also their special functions, he has kept true to his word.

MUST TRY

MINI DESSERT CUPS

It started as a hobby, building up to the tastiest trifles at backyard barbecues, but with a slight nudge, Vanessa Kefalouros starting creating little versions of her desserts including her famous white chocolate panna cotta, noting that they’re “also a bit more sociable to take”.

DOUBLE WHIPLASH

A simple sandwich is fine sometimes but when you’re feeling a bit hungrier, head over this family owned business that features some of the biggest burgers around such as the Double Whiplash — two beef patties, three slices of American Cheese, jalapeños, tomatoes, lettuce, turkey bacon, grilled pineapple and a pickled and chilli mayo.

SMASHED AVO

When hunting down this small cafe known for its good coffee, and generous serving of avocado on toast, you can check the address or just keep a look out for a cream and cinnamon curly haired pup, where along with his person, makes a daily appearance at an outside table.

— Babel, 327 Bay St

HELLENIC PITA

You could opt to have all the fixings laid out on the plate or just get it wrapped up with the Hellenic Pita, a choice of tender slow-cooked beef, lamb, chicken, pork or haloumi tucked in with chips and a selection of dips and slaw.

— The Hellenic, 301 Bay St

FISH AND CHIPS

Whether you’re after fresh fish for dinner or some tasty takeaway, this seafood shop is here to serve. Bring along a buddy so you can share some Sydney rock oysters alongside a large basket loaded with fried fish, calamari rings, prawn cutlets and chips. There are tables out front but the best seat is actually a block away on the beach.
