An iPhone game that conveys the feelings of infatuation, familiarity and estrangement better than most, Florence is an animated short that leverages interactivity in a unique and satisfying way.

Florence Yeoh is a twenty-something stuck in a monochrome routine, but when she runs into cellist Krish and falls immediately in love, her entire perception of the world begins to change. Over a number of years they grow close, entwine their lives together and then eventually fall apart.

Florence's zine-style art, brilliant music and evocative minigames make it a memorable experience.

Florence's zine-style art, brilliant music and evocative minigames make it a memorable experience.

It's a brief story, taking a little more than half an hour to see through, and while it's not the most original tale of love and loss it is wonderfully told. The wordless action, paired with stellar musical backing (headphones definitely required) reminds of an artsy short film, but there's an added dimension to the storytelling here you just couldn't replicate in a non-interactive medium.

In each scene the player needs to use the touchscreen to guide Florence's actions, but unlike most narrative video games you're not making decisions that alter the course of events or doing any exploration. Instead, the little games and puzzles act as allegories that give you a sense of the emotion in the scene and a more tangible way to experience the story.

For example on Florence and Krish's first date, Krish opens his mouth to speak and a text-message-style bubble appears. In order for Florence to answer, you need to put together puzzle pieces to make a bubble of your own. It's awkward work, and at first it takes a few seconds to work out each reply.
