A tram has broken down on one of the busiest intersections in Adelaide, causing traffic delays in the lead-up to peak hour.

Commuters have been warned to avoid the intersection of North Terrace and King William Street while technicians work on the tram.

Trams are still running between Glenelg and Victoria Square, but substitute buses are being used between Victoria Square and the Entertainment Centre.

Adelaide Metro said all buses are experiencing delays.

The tram has been stuck at the intersection since mid-afternoon, and there are no estimates on when it will be running again.

"We are doing all we can to rectify the situation as soon as possible," a Department of Transport spokesperson said.

Buses are having to weave around the broken-down tram.

Back in January, the same CBD intersection was closed for about a fortnight while new tram lines were laid, in preparation for trams to start operating along the eastern end of North Terrace.
