"There are no words to describe a scene where a mother is fighting with every ounce of her being to save her baby girl."

However, she said the dog did not belong to a member of her family: "The dog in question cleared a fenced yard (someone else's dog not our family's). I really don't care what the breed of dog it[sic] was.

"Our family have lost our baby girl who never got a chance to live her life."

A friend of the baby's mother, who started a GoFundMe crowd-funding page to raise money for funeral costs, said "little Kamillah's passing was so unexpected and a tragic accident".

She paid tribute to the girl as "a beautiful little angel" who "grew her wings much too early".

"On [March 3], little Kamillah was taken home. She was loved and adored by so many.

"We would love to be able to give little Kamillah the goodbye she deserves, but unfortunately did not expect."

The fund-raising page had generated donations of more than $1000, with a goal of $6000, by Sunday afternoon.

Donors left condolence messages, including one from Julie Parker which read:

"Such a sad sad loss of such a beautiful baby ... Fly high beautiful girl. Forever in our hearts and thoughts."

Carly Campbell wrote: "My thoughts are with your family during this tragic time.

"I hope this beautiful girl gets the send off that she deserves."

Neighbour Ron Connors told Channel Seven he saw an ambulance officer running out of the house with a toddler in his arms.

A NSW Police spokesperson said the dog's fate would be decided by Gwydir Shire Council.

The animal was impounded; it is not known if it will be killed.

New England police are investigating the attack and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

There were about 3430 dog attacks reported to local NSW councils throughout 2017, with 310 of these involving children under the age of 16.

No human deaths were recorded in NSW last year, however, the baby girl's death comes about six months after a Canberra woman was killed by her pet pitbull last October.
