THREE men who tortured, murdered and burnt the remains of Gold Coast drug dealer Shaun Barker have been sentenced to life behind bars.
The 33-year-old was last seen alive in December 2013. Brisbane Supreme Court heard one of the killers used Facebook to advertise body parts for sale, using a human skull as part of a profile picture.
His sister, Sheridan Mollenhauer told the court she was on her honeymoon when she found out her brother’s charred bones had been found in a Queensland forest.
But what followed was the nightmare of discovering he had been tortured, burnt and his bones scattered in a forest and then the macabre details killer Stephen John Armitage posted on Facebook.
“You went on to put in a very large post on your page advertising that you had body parts for sale,” she told the Brisbane Supreme Court today. “Then you went and put a profile picture of yourself laying on a bed with your hands tied to the bed and a human skull in front of you.”
His charred remains were found in a forest near Gympie four months later. Father and son Stephen John Armitage and Matthew Leslie Armitage, as well as William Francis Dean were found guilty of Mr Barker’s murder, torture and interfering with his corpse in 2017.
Justice David Jackson said their brutality included trapping the father-of-one in an Esky and using a hose to “pipe water” into it until he “almost drowned”.
He said the men also “smashed his face, kneecaps and every bone in his left hand” before he was murdered and dumped in a Gympie forest between December 2013 and April 2014.
There were also reports his bones had been broken and his genitals had been covered in honey to attract ants.
After the sentencing, Mr Barker’s sister Sheridan Mollenhauer slammed his killers, telling them: “You brutally murdered my brother. You decided his life wasn’t worth living. You made sure he suffered.”
Ms Mollenhauer delivered her emotional victim impact statement during the sentencing this morning of the three men.
Brisbane Supreme Court heard the trio tortured Mr Barker over days before killing him.
Justice Jackson said while it was difficult to know how reliable some of the evidence given during both trials was, he said the men inflicted “severe pain and suffering” on their victim.
“Shaun Barker was being tortured to provide some kind of information, probably about drugs, that the defendants ... thought he had taken,” he said. His body was later burnt in a fire pit before his bones were scattered in the forest.
Justice Jackson sentenced the Armitage men to life in jail with parole eligibility after 20 years.
Dean was considered the ringleader of the crimes because he assaulted Mr Barker on the Gold Coast before taking him to Gympie in December 2013.
The 41-year-old Toowoomba-born man was sentenced to life and he will not be able to apply for parole until he serves 20 years.
The three killers were convicted of murder, torture and interfering with a corpse in 2017.
Mr Barker’s burnt body was found in a Gympie forest in April 2014, and the trio were arrested the following October.
They faced trial in March and August of 2017 and they were sentenced this morning.
“There was evidence he (Mr Barker) cried out for water and food,” Justice Jackson noted during the sentencing.
Justice Jackson said the torture was likely related to drugs that the three killers believed Mr Barker had information about.
The men have been on remand since they were charged.
