Blue Care sold the site almost four years ago and it has been abandoned ever since, as redevelopment plans tried to get off the ground.

Mr Cameron said he could remember at least three fires at the site during the past year, with a large blaze in November resulting in toxic fire retardant leaking into nearby Salvin Creek.

Mr Cameron said the fire could have spread along the Salvin Creek corridor if it had not been for the efforts of fire crews. Toxic fire retardant previously leaked into the nearby waterway.

In the latest developments, Brisbane City Council created a petition to put pressure on TriCare to demolish the buildings.

"This is our area, it’s turning into a bloody joke," Mr Cameron said.

"A simple demolition permit should have been applied for two years ago."

"What are they waiting for? Nearby houses to be burnt down? We were lucky this time, thanks to the firies."

Mr Cameron expressed his dissatisfaction with the efforts of Brisbane City Council to force the site owner to act and said the Queensland government should intervene.

Deputy mayor Adrian Schrinner said he had "had a gutful" of TriCare's broken promises, having met with the aged care provider last year to encourage redevelopment plans to get started.

However, Cr Schrinner conceded council had no legal powers to force the developer to demolish the existing buildings anytime soon.

“The Salvin Park nursing home is an eyesore and has now become a safety issue for the community,” he said.

“Last night’s fire was just one of many and is a complete drain on emergency services. It’s not good enough.”

“There are redevelopment plans for this site to build a new aged care facility, but for some reason unknown to me TriCare are dragging their heels getting anything started."

“When I met with the owner’s representative they committed to demolishing the dilapidated buildings early this year.

“According to the timeframe it should be starting any day now but I can see no evidence that demolition will start soon and that’s a big concern for both me and local residents.”

According to a Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman, the blaze only spared "a couple of sheds out the back" on the abandoned site.

Emergency services were called just before 9pm, with 10 fire crews bringing the flames under control about 10.50pm and extinguishing the blaze about an hour later.

A police spokesman said no complaint had been made regarding the fire so investigations would not be going any further.

Attempts were made by Fairfax Media to contact TriCare for comment.
