Cameron White has all but shut the door on his chances of playing international cricket again, with the veteran batsman suggesting that if he was still in Australia's selectors' thoughts a return would have happened by now.

White, 34, has been in strong form for the Melbourne Renegades in the early stages of the Big Bash League, providing anchoring half-centuries in the Renegades' wins against Hobart and Brisbane.

While no longer a walk-up start for Victoria's Sheffield Shield team, White has remained a force in white ball cricket, leading to questions about whether he could add to his international experience, which features four Tests, 88 one-day internationals and 47 Twenty20 internationals, including stints as captain of both the ODI and Twenty20 team.

White hasn't played for Australia since an ODI against England in January 2015, shortly before that year's World Cup, for which he missed selection.

He has been a vocal critic of national selectors, saying early this year that they sometimes treated Australia's team as a "development team". Those comments came following the controversial decision to pick little-known Queensland batsman Sam Heazlett for the Chappell-Hadlee series in New Zealand with Steve Smith was unavailable through injury. Australian selection chief Trevor Hohns subsequently hit back at White, saying that the Victorian's international career hadn't been "earth shattering".

Asked about his international chances given his strong BBL form, White said he didn't think a recall was at all likely. "Nah ... I don't think so," a candid White said.

"I think if I was going to get picked I probably would have been picked in the past couple of years, I would have thought, with my white-ball form. There's always hope but I don't think so."

In any case the former Victorian captain said he was feeling good about his cricket. "I've felt in pretty good form all year ... I'm just in a good place mentally," White said.

"I'm not premeditating things too much, which is kind of difficult to do in Twenty20 cricket, but things are probably just going my way a bit."

The Renegades (2-0) next play at home to the Perth Scorchers at Etihad Stadium on Friday night. The Scorchers have never lost to the Renegades in six completed seasons of the BBL.
