Canberra's first Christmas baby was in no hurry to come into the world, but her parents are glad she waited.

She was more than a week overdue when she was born just after 5am Christmas morning at Canberra Hospital.

Parents Rita Regmi and Deepak Wagle, of Harrison, arrived in Australia from Nepal four years ago.

As Hindus, Christmas has never been a traditional celebration for them, but the day now has new meaning.

"Actually for us we don't celebrate Christmas but we think she's very lucky to be born on Christmas," Ms Regmi said.

"It is something more special for us now.

"There are so many Christian people in Nepal that we still liked to acknowledge Christmas."

And while six-year-old sister Pranjali was hoping for a baby brother, she was excited to meet her sister.

Ms Regmi was due to be induced on December 28 if she had not gone into labour by then.

But dad Deepak had his fingers crossed for a Christmas Day birth.

The baby is yet to be named but they'll think about names that will go nicely with her sister's - Pranjali.

"He wanted her to be born on Christmas day, he wins this time!" Ms Regmi said.

Mr Wagle said they were very excited to have their baby daughter named Canberra's first Christmas baby and appreciated all the support they had at the hospital.

Ms Regmi felt the first signs of labour about 10pm on Christmas Eve.

She fell asleep but woke up about 12.30am with heavier cramps.

At two o'clock she woke her husband up and they rushed to the hospital.

Baby was born at 5.01 just a few hours after arriving at the ward about 2.45am.
