Hello! Here’s what you need to know on Friday.

1. Three million EU citizens living in the UK will be allowed to stay after Brexit, under prime minister Theresa May’s Brexit proposal unveiled at an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday. Those people would be granted a “UK settled status” if they had lived there for at least five years.

2. German Chancellor Angela Merkel says the UK’s plans to ensure the rights of EU citizens in Britain after Brexit is “a good start” but also said there was “still a lot to do”.

3. The EU president still holds out hope that Brexit can be reversed even though the negotiations on Britain’s departure from the European Union officially started this week.

4. North Korea has tested a new rocket engine as part of its plans to develop an intercontinental nuclear-armed rockets.

5. European Union leaders launched their the most ambitious defense plan for decades. The group has agreed a multi-billion-euro weapons fund, shared financing for battlegroups and allowing a coalition of the willing to conduct more missions abroad.

6. Russia says new US sanctions “seriously threaten the whole relationship” between Moscow and Washington. This week the US added 38 individuals and entities to its sanctions list targeting the Russians and pro-Russian rebels it blames for the fighting in Ukraine.

7. US Marines are extending their deployment to Norway, and it’s already irked Russia. About 330 marines have been in central Norway since January 2017, where they’ve trained with Norwegian and other partner forces for cold-weather operations.

8. A French fitness star has been killed by an exploding whipped cream dispenser. Rebecca Burger died after the dispenser struck her chest causing a cardiac arrest.

9. The US is the latest of countries to ban Brazilian meat imports following “recurring concerns about the safety of products”.

10. Greece is in a stink. Piles of rubbish have been mounting in cities across the country since the start of the week in a dispute over thousands of refuse collectors’ jobs.
