If you’re looking for the ultimate fancy dress costume, Opera Australia may just have the outfit you’re looking for.

The national company has more than 10,000 hand-crafted costumes, but had decided to auction off around 1500 of them, along with 800 artworks, including costume and set design drawings, accessories, music scores and other memorabilia.

Auction house Leonard Joel is putting 2,500 items under the hammer in a two-day sale on June 30 and July 1, including costumes Baz Luhrmann’s famous 1990 production of La Bohème, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa’s ‘Violetta’ costume from La Traviata, Sigrid Thornton’s ‘Desirée’ costume from A Little Night Music and Graham Pushee’s ‘Rinaldo’ “armour” (made from vac-formed plastic), from the Handel opera of the same name.

The outfits range in price from around $1,500 to $25,000.

Ahead of the auction, Opera Australia’s is opening the doors to its headquarters in Sydney’s Surry Hills to the public from this Saturday, June 24, to show off the items for sale.

The Opera Centre, 480 Elizabeth Street, Surry Hills, will be open 11:30am–1:30pm on June 24 to the general public.

Here’s a sample of what you’ll see.
