Cricket: Australia claim a three wicket win over India in the third ODI at the MCG thanks to a 96 run haul from Glenn Maxwell

Nathan Lyon has got his wish to prove himself as a one day player after being named in the one day squad for the remaining matches against India.

And, veterans Shane Watson and Shaun Tait have discovered their international careers are not over after they were named in the T20 squad for the three matches in that format against India later in the month.

While they received good news, former T20 captain George Bailey and all rounder Mitch Marsh miss out on the series which is a blow to their chances of playing next month’s T20 world cup.

Chris Lynn, Travis Head and Andrew Tye have all been named to make their debut in the series.

Lyon’s 185 Test wickets make him Australian’s greatest ever bowler in that format, but he has been constantly ignored in the 50 over game.

He played eight ODIs between 2012 and 2014 but selectors have opted for the batting all rounder Glenn Maxwell and ignored Lyon, leaving him out of the World Cup squad.

The off spinner comes into the squad at the expense of young West Australian off spinner Joel Paris, while Usman Khawaja has also been sent back to the BBL without playing a game as David Warner is set to rejoin after the birth of his second daughter.

“Nathan Lyon comes off the back of good form in the KFC BBL and we decided the time is right to have another look at him in the shorter forms of the game,” chairman of selectors Rod Marsh said.

“Both Usman Khawaja and Joel Paris now become available for their BBL clubs. We have told them to go back to those clubs and demand we select them again through outstanding performances.”

Selectors named a 17 man squad for the T20 tournament, throwing a lifeline to Watson who missed out on the ODI series and Tait who has not played for Australia for five years,

“Our choice of 17 for the KFC T20Is gives us a chance to look at some options ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 in India,” Marsh said.

“Shane Watson has earned his recall to Australian colours through a combination of his experience — especially in short-form cricket — the all-round package he offers and the fact he is bang in form at the moment, having put performances on the board for the Sydney Thunder.

“Shaun Tait returns on the basis that he is the quickest bowler going around in Australia at the moment and he offers us that explosive option if we choose to use it. Like Shane Watson, he is also vastly experienced in Twenty20 cricket.

“Chris Lynn, Travis Head and Andrew Tye have made irresistible cases for inclusion off the back of individual excellence in the KFC BBL and we are delighted to offer them the opportunity to push their claims for inclusion in the ICC World Twenty20.

“In terms of leg-spin, Cameron Boyce has once again impressed in domestic action and deserves his spot.

“Sadly we could not find places for George Bailey and Mitchell Marsh in the Twenty20 International squad but for both of them, and for others who have missed out on places in that line-up, the door is certainly not closed for selection for the ICC World Twenty20.

“We know what both those players are capable of, and both have significant experience of playing Twenty20 cricket in India where the ICC World Twenty20 takes place, but we want them to continue to press their cases for inclusion while we take this opportunity to look at other contenders.”
