“We’ve always done stuff there [on the island] and when I moved into Brisbane community 10 years ago, I remember being more active in the marches,” she says.

Ms Walker says she comes in show of solidarity. “But this is a day of mourning to us and I don’t support Australia Day,” she says.

“I don’t think we should have it or that it’s reasonable to celebrate genocide.”

Ms Walker believes the education system needs to teach the Aboriginal history of this country.

“I think it’s really important to stress that education will go along way for reconciliation,” she says.

“Most people don’t understand this day. It’s easier to sit in their own ignorance... because they don't know.

“My great-grandma was an activist for a long time. Her words were ‘don’t hate, educate’ and I think there’s a lot of power in that.”
