Geelong’s Jeremy Cameron will miss the Cats’ season opener against Adelaide after re-injuring his hamstring at training on Wednesday.

The star forward, who joined the club as a free agent this season, hurt his hamstring in January but had been tracking well in his recovery before he re-injured it at this week’s main training session.

Although the Cats are hopeful the injury is relatively minor, they have ruled him out for the first two rounds as they attempt to get to the bottom of the recurring problem.

His injury means the only new faces for the Cats will be veteran recruits Shaun Higgins and Isaac Smith.

Geelong have named Jordan Clark after he played just three games in 2020 and Josh Jenkins, who played just one game last season, will play against his former club. Tom Atkins returns as a defender after missing out on selection in last year’s decider and Zach Guthrie has taken Jack Henry’s spot.

Missing from last year’s grand final team are Mitch Duncan, Sam Simpson and Luke Dahlhaus through injury, Henry, who is an emergency and potential sub, and Gary Ablett and Harry Taylor, who both retired at the end of 2020.

Adelaide have named Sam Berry and James Rowe to make their debut against the Cats but left out forward Darcy Fogarty, who is struggling to cement a spot as he enters his fourth season.

Essendon will introduce five new faces to take on Hawthorn with Nik Cox and Harrison Jones making their AFL debut while Peter Wright, Jye Caldwell and Nick Hind, will play their first match in Bombers colours.
