"We do work with the cycling community to provide support for cyclists, for instance the one-metre rule has been implemented.

"We are spending $140 million on new cycle pathways around Western Australia, so we are doing all we can to support the cycling community."

The Road Safety Commission announced a plan to reduce speed limits on WA roads earlier this month, arguing the initiative would potentially save more than 500 lives by 2020.

Under the proposal, announced by executive director Iain Cameron on June 8, speed limits could be dropped by 10km/h on 40 to 100km/h roads, and from 110km/h down to 100km/h if the road isn't a highway or a freeway.

WestCycle has publicly voiced its support for the Road Safety Council's proposal, but argue the plan doesn't go far enough.

"Lower speed limits protect bike riders, pedestrians and children on our streets," WestCycle wrote in a social media post on Saturday.

"Would you be happy to be delayed by a few seconds if it meant saving a life?"

However, they are urging people to have their say about the proposal, which is currently open for public comment.
