ChildFund Australia CEO Nigel Spence provides an update on the emergency situation in the Horn of Africa - focusing on the Turkana district of northern Kenya, where ChildFund is assisting children and families who are suffering from one of the worst droughts seen in our lifetime.
ChildFund's response is targeting infants and very young children who are the most vulnerable in emergency situations like this. Children under 5 are at the highest risk of illness and death from malnutrition and dehydration. Even for those who make it, inadequate food intake at this age can result in serious lifelong impairments.
ChildFund is also focused on helping people in their own communities. If families are forced to leave their homes in search of food and water, children will be taken on long and dangerous journeys to overcrowded camps. The camps are already unable to cope with the numbers of people needing help -- but more people will keep arriving if they are not provided with assistance where they live.
