Watch as Better Homes and Gardens shows you how to choose clay pots for you container garden! Clay flower pots are available for a range of prices, mainly depending upon the quality of material used to create them. Low porosity, high-fired clay is the best quality ceramic pots to use when container gardening. Especially ideal in cooler climates, this heavy, hard clay is able to resist freezing temperatures. Porous, soft clay is less durable, particularly in cold weather. To figure out which kind of clay your flower pots are, use the tap test. Flick the pot with your finger, and if it is a high-fired ceramic, you should be able to hear a melodic ring. Soft clay is accompanied by a relatively dull sound when tapped. High-fired ceramic pots are more rugged, but that doesn't mean soft-fired clay pots can't be wonderful options for a container garden. They are less costly, and if you take them into a shed or garage for the winter, you can get years of wear out of them. However, if you are looking for a garden pot to last throughout winter, a high-fired pot may be the way to go. Take into account what you are trying to achieve with your container garden and your environment, and you'll choose a clay pot that is perfect for you!
