Following the first Rethink Mercy Conference in April 2014, we asked some of the pastors and ministry leaders to share their thoughts on mercy ministry centered on the gospel. Over the next few days we will share their comments in their entirety.

Dr. Albert Mohler
You know I'm just so thankful there are so many churches that are rediscovering and recommitting to mercy ministries. And you know to use the word "mercy" is to point to the whole issue, and that is the fact that we know who we are in Christ because he has shown us mercy. It is by mercy that we have been saved, by mercy we have been preserved, it's by mercy we are given the joy of going out into the world with the good message of the Gospel, the message that saves.
And I think that it's a good thing that so many churches are beginning to recapture that word because that word points to a basic Christian instinct and that is as we have been brought near to Christ, we are to bring Christ near to the world.
And that, of course, means first of all, the Gospel and evangelism, but as the book of James makes very clear it also means to have been saved by grace are those who understand what true religion is, that is true faithfulness to Christ, which is to visit widows and orphans in their need and to keep ourselves unstained from the world.
