DEAN Mumm marked his first Test in five years by scoring an outstanding try to help Australia secure a bonus-point win over Argentina.

The Wallabies now lead The Rugby Championship on points difference over New Zealand after two wins from as many games, setting up a tantalising clash against the All Blacks in Sydney in a fortnight that will determine the winner of the four nation tournament.

An extra clash against the All Blacks the following week in Auckland will only count for the Bledisloe Cup, meaning the match at ANZ Stadium will determine the home of The Rugby Championship trophy, which Australia has not held since 2011.

Two tries in the final three minutes to Tevita Kuridrani and Adam Ashley-Cooper gave Australia a 34-9 win, however the scoreline does not indicate the scrappy nature of the visitors’ performance.

The Wallabies scrum was dominated early, conceding penalties in the 26th and 35th minutes, then monstered backwards to a penalty advantage in the 46th.

But with the introduction of reserve front row Scott Sio, Tatafu Polota-Nau and Sekope Kepu, Australia swung back the momentum by shoving the Pumas pack backwards and winning two penalties of their own.

The match was closely fought up to the 59th minute, when replacement lock Mumm — forced to play in the backrow after Scott Fardy went off injured — beat three tacklers in a skilful sideline run to score Australia’s second try.

Mumm last played for Australia in November 2010, but made a strong claim to retain his place in the squad, also producing an important turnover late in the match.

Despite the sin-binning of Quade Cooper in the 66th minute, Australia dominated the remainder of the game after Mumm’s five-pointer and snuck through with the bonus point when Ashley-Cooper touched down in the corner just before the full-time siren.

Rugby: Tim Horan says despite some disappointments in Argentina, the Wallabies played well enough to deserve their win over the Pumas

“To be honest, I’ve been out of the Test arena for a couple of years so I was stoked to touch the ball in a Test match, let alone get a try or a carry,” Mumm said.

“I was pleased with it, I only had one Test try previously and it was about two metres out, so this was an improvement.

“Anytime you get the ball, you just try to stay alive. It was as simple as that. You get closer and I probably didn’t expect that to happen. I was pretty close to the touchline but once you get sight of the try line, that’s a good incentive. I was pretty happy.

“The longer the game went, the more we seemed to get stuck into them and gain momentum. This is a pretty good result. You can sense this is a pretty jovial camp. Speaking to a lot of the boys about what happened here last year, it’s a nice turnaround.

“You’re as good as the opportunity that’s given to you. Cheik and the coaching staff here have given me an opportunity.

“I really am just loving this environment, it’s a very positive place at the moments. I want to stay in this environment because it’s a nice place to be.”

Rugby Championship: Wallabies captain Stephen Moore reacts to his sides 34-9 point win over the Pumas in Argentina.

Mumm said the looming match against New Zealand would be a special event.

“It’s a great Test, a one-off Test for The Rugby Championship in Sydney, it’s perfect,” Mumm said.

“We’re all pretty excited and pretty hungry. It’s a very competitive environment at the moment and hopefully they do have tough decisions to make.”

Loosehead prop James Slipper went to the sidelines suffering concussion just before the break, and did not return for the second half, giving Sio extended game-time.

Kepu replaced Greg Holmes in the 56th minute, while Polota-Nau replaced hooker Stephen Moore in the 70th.

The first scrum involving the Sio, Polota-Nau and Kepu front row combination demolished Argentina’s scrum, earning their first penalty of the match for dominating that set-piece.

Australia will be worried about centre Matt Toomua, who suffered a heavy concussion and did not play any further part after coming off in the 10th minute.

Toomua has had a number of head knocks in the past.

Five-eighth Bernard Foley managed to kick just five goals from nine attempts, but Australia’s defence ensured they earned victory, righting the embarrassment of last year’s loss at the Estadio Malvinas.

Despite a strong start in which they had virtually all the ball in the opening 10 minutes, the Wallabies struggled to post points and appeared off the pace.

Australia led 8-6 at half-time, with Joe Tomane crossing in the 18th minute after a strong kick return from Israel Folau.

Foley missed the conversion from out wide and a Nicolas Sanchez got the home side on the board with a penalty goal in the 30th minute.

Rugby Championship: Quade Cooper leaves the Wallabies a man down after this late tackle in Australias Rugby Championship clash with the Pumas in Argentina

Foley missed a penalty attempt shortly after, but just before the break landed his first goal from another penalty shot.

Argentina retrieved the kick restart just before the half-time siren sounded and earned a penalty in front of the posts, which Sanchez duly knocked over the cut the deficit to two points.

The sides traded more penalties after the break, before Mumm’s try put Australia in the box seat.
