THEY were written off as underdogs throughout the competition, but it was Steve and Tiana Falzon who had the last laugh after being crowned the winners of House Rules 2015.
The first father-and-daughter team to compete on Channel 7’s reality renovation show, the popular pair took out the title during last night’s live grand final.
Emotions ran high in the two-hour episode and peaked when the NSW duo, from the Mt Druitt area, beat Queensland’s Ben Edgeworth and Danielle Russell to win the prize — which was Mr Falzon’s $250,000 mortgage paid off.
The Mt Druitt Standard’s real estate reporter was at the winner’s party and spoke with the Falzons just minutes after they were crowned the show’s best.
“I honestly cannot believe it,†Mr Falzon, 47, said. “It has not sunken in yet; this is one of those feelings that is just so surreal.â€
“I have always dreamt of being mortgage-free but never thought it would happen. I thought I would be paying this place off for the rest of my life.â€
Undoubtedly the dark horses of this series, the Falzons scraped through almost every week but soared in skill and performance when it mattered most.
It was Ms Falzon’s idea to enter the inexperienced renovations into the competition to give back to her father, who worked hard to keep the family going when her mother, Danielle, died.
“For so long Dad has been trying to get his house renovated, he tries to do little bits here and there — always on the cheapest budget possible — and it always stuffs up,†Ms Falzon, 26, said.
“I thought if we get on the show, no one is a loser on it, and at least he will get the inside of his house done, and then we went through the whole thing,†she laughed.
Each team had to transform the garage of the other team’s house in one last challenge and NSW came out on top by two points, with a combined 19 out of 20 from the judges.
“I didn’t want to leave the competition without getting a 10 (out of 10) and we did it,†Ms Falzon said.
FATHER AND DAUGHTER BATTLERS WIN THE ULTIMATE PRIZE
For Mr Falzon, the perfect 10 was “the icing on the cake.â€
Viewer votes made up 50 per cent of the deciding points that were added to the judges’ scores.
Their success caused a social media storm as viewers were pleased the team had won and the story was a positive one for Mt Druitt.
Surrounded by family and friends at the final hurdle, they had a visible bond. Mr Falzon said their relationship set them apart from the others which helped them to succeed.
“(Being related) is different to the partnership of an ordinary couple,†he said.
“Tiana and I have always been close and there have been times in our lives, especially when she was younger, when we would just look at each other and knew what we wanted to say, we didn’t have to talk.
“As Tiana got older it changed a little bit but I think it started coming back throughout the competition, just by us spending a lot of time together, and here we are.â€
Mr Falzon lives at the updated house with his partner Deanne and sons, Andrew and Rory.
Ms Falzon recently married and moved out to live with her husband, Dean, close by. But she said the Mt Druitt area would always be “home†to the family.
The support shown by the local community throughout the show was strongly appreciated by the pair, according to Mr Falzon.
“Everywhere I went I always had positive comments from the people around here, they were just fantastic, and to be honest, I couldn’t be more proud of this area,†he said.
“Just because I have won all of this doesn’t mean I am going to sell up and move away or anything like that. This is me, I’ll be here forever.â€
The winners said they were looking forward to spending more family time together after the show, with Mr Falzon starting his debt-free life.
