Marketing agent Preston Westmoreland of Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty said the Arizona boulder house, which was designed by architect Charles Johnson, was now for sale for $5.6 million.

The home itself has five bedrooms, and is integrated into a massive outcrop of granite boulders which make up about 60 per cent of its structure.

It sits on about 3.5 ha of desert land and with ancient rock carvings chiselled into the home’s exterior it is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The property is surrounded by desert and is bordered by Whisper Rock golf course.

Mr Westmoreland said it was built by the Empie family in the early 1980s when they answered an advertisement for the land that said “who wants to buy my beautiful pile of rocks?”.

They hired Charles Johnson to design the unusual residence and to incorporate the huge boulders into the structure and grounds.

Historically the site was used an ancient encampment for a number of Native American tribes.

Certain parts of the rocks were used to record the tribe’s colanders.

In the main living area, on the Spring and Fall equinoxes, a beam of light travels across the room and hits an ancient spiral calendar chiselled into the rocks.

Mr Westmoreland said they had already conducted a lot of showings for the property but had received no offers yet.

He said as the weather was becoming hotter, the market generally slowed down in the area during summer.
