Around 1.2 million trees will be planted across Australia on the 20th anniversary of National Tree Day.

Planet Ark says this year's tally is expected to bring the total number of trees planted over the last two decades to more than 22 million.

Around 3,000 tree planting events are being held today to get communities to connect with and care for their local environment.
