THE auction of late entertainer Stuart Wagstaff’s lower north shore home was, as expected, a great performance, selling for $165,000 above the set reserve.

The two-bedroom unit at 33/37-45 Barry St, Neutral Bay was still furnished with many of the veteran screen legend’s personal belongings when about 70 buyers turned up on Saturday to watch it sell under the hammer for $1.165 million.

There were 10 registered bidders among the crowd, five of which contributed a total of 40 bids before it sold to an Australian investor, Raine & Horne Neutral Bay selling agent David Buttel said.

“I think people enjoyed knowing who had lived there and I must say, for all the same reasons that it appealed to Stuart many years ago, they were the same reasons it appealed to people today,” Mr Buttel said.

The apartment includes built in wardrobes in both bedrooms, a separate laundry, level lift access, lockup basement garage and a large entertaining balcony which has views of the city.

Despite selling to an investor, Mr Buttel said most interest had come from owner-occupiers in a reflection of the increased presence of downsizers in the local market.

“Neutral Bay is a strong market place and it’s always strong with investors but at the moment (is popular) with lots of people that are selling up larger homes and downsizing.”

Mr Wagstaff was a prominent television personality starring on every Australian network and is perhaps best known for his role on the 1970s game show Blankety Blanks.

According to CoreLogic RP Data, Mr Wagstaff paid $660,000 back in 2007 for the property, which once hosted a private screening of Russell Crowe’s award-winning film The Water Diviner.

The Hollywood actor sent a special copy of the film to Wagstaff, an old friend, to watch in the comfort of his home after his ailing health prevented him from attending the premier.

Mr Wagstaff passed away in March this year aged 90, following a sixth-month battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

The median sale price of units in Neutral Bay is $760,000.
