POPULAR television identity Sarah Harris first suspected she could be pregnant when her favourite bra didn’t quite fit anymore.
The 33-year-old Studio 10 co-host and her husband Tom Ward had only just started trying for a baby several weeks prior.
“We were going to a wedding and I just felt really off that day,†Harris recalled.
“Then I was getting dressed and I couldn’t get my bra on. I realised my boobs were suddenly much bigger. That’s when I thought I could be pregnant. The ill-fitting bra gave it away.â€
A pregnancy test the next day confirmed her suspicions, but her hubby refused to believe their luck until he saw the ultrasound with his own eyes.
“It happened really quickly. We were shocked but obviously very happy.â€
On the advice of friends, the couple — who married last July — kept the news to themselves until the end of the first trimester.
This week, Harris revealed live on the Network Ten morning show that she was 15 weeks along.
“The audience had already started to cotton on,†she laughed.
“We’re shot from every single angle so it was hard to keep under wraps. There was no way we could hide it any longer.â€
The first few months have been tough at times, with Harris suffering acute morning sickness.
“I’ve felt pretty lousy. For most it, I was sick all day, constantly feeling just awful. It felt like a hangover that never went away.
“Eating made me feel better, so that’s what I’ve been doing.
“Not healthy stuff though — chicken burgers, chips, snacks ... I’ve stacked on five or six kilos. I don’t care that much.â€
While she’s ecstatic, there was a time when the career journalist couldn’t imagine having children. Her focus then was firmly on realising her long-held TV ambitions.
“I was all about career. I had my head down. But it was different back then too, almost 15 years ago. For women in media, it seemed really hard to have a career and a baby.â€
In her late 20s, Harris said something shifted. Meeting the love of her life six years ago only strengthened her desire to be a mum.
And the messages in recent days from some high-profile media parents has shown just how far the industry has come.
“Carrie Bickmore sent her best wishes, which was great. Leigh Sales also sent me a photo of her lovely little baby.
“These are women who have paved the way for people like me. It makes it a little less scary than it might’ve been once upon a time. It’s like a sisterhood of media mothers. It’s nice.â€
In recent weeks, Harris has found herself daydreaming about the kind of mum she might be.
There’s a part of her that wants to be a bit of a “cool mumâ€, and she hopes her naturally “chilled nature†carries on once bub arrives.
“Who knows. That’ll probably all go out the window,†she laughed.
“At the end of the day, I just want to be a mum who copes the best she can and raises a kid who’s happy and well-adjusted.â€
While she doesn’t mind if it’s a boy or a girl, Harris wants to find out either way as soon as possible.
“I hate surprises. I just want to know what’s going on in there. Does that make me sound like a control freak?â€
Harris is due on Christmas Day. In regards to her return to work after that, she plans to “play it by earâ€.
