Australian Sam Groth has set up a grand slam rematch against Roger Federer after getting the best of his housemate James Duckworth in the second round at Wimbledon.

Groth, who took on Federer on Arthur Ashe Stadium in the second round of the US Open last year, will once again square off with the Swiss legend in the third round at The All England Club.

It came at the expense of Duckworth, the fellow Aussie who has the same coach and is sharing a rented Wimbledon house with Groth and his girlfriend.

Their coach, Ben Mathias, wasn't at Wimbledon to see it, refusing to attend the match that saw Groth prevail 7-5, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).

"It's a hard one isn't it," Groth said.

"I think we were both a bit tense out there to start and it showed. We saw each other 15 minutes after in the locker room and we spoke about the footy and how our supercoach teams did and everything seemed okay. James is a good mate and we have six months left together of travelling with our coach so hopefully everything's fine."

Groth saved seven break points at 6-5 in the first, eventually capitalising on his third set point to close it out in 42 minutes.

The big-serving Australian then found himself up 4-0 in the second, and despite Duckworth managing to get himself back in the contest, Groth's serve proved too difficult to overcome.

Groth and Duckworth went tit-for-tat in the third set, but Groth once again get the better of the 23-year-old in the tie breaker.

When Groth took on Federer in New York last year, the 27-year-old fell in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

"I think it's not just playing one of the all time greats, it's the fact I'm in the third round at Wimbledon and it's my second time in the third round of a slam this year," Groth said.

"We all know where I've come from now over the last few years. Every time I do an interview like this I say the same thing - I'm loving every minute of it and really enjoying the journey that I'm on and hopefully this is still just the start of something more."
