A man has been charged over the stabbing of a good Samaritan in Melbourne's north.

Kane Anthony Larsen, 42, is accused of stabbing a good Samaritan who chased him down after he snatched a woman's handbag from the front seat of her car in the car park of Preston Market on Murray Road on June 12.

He allegedly left the victim – a 37-year-old Preston man – with serious injuries to the side of his chest and hands.

Police on Tuesday released CCTV footage and images of a shirtless man with a knife stashed in the back of his jeans, who was seen in Preston about the time of the incident.
