Top daily temperatures are on the rise for rest of the long weekend as clear skies and sunshine take the edge off the chilly start to winter.

Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said temperatures had been threatening to reach 15 degrees in the late part of the week.

"On Friday and Saturday we got to 14 degrees, but Sunday and Monday look likely to reach 15 finally," she said.

"We have a big high pressure system sitting over NSW. At the moment, we have really light winds, clear skies and it eventually warms up under those clear skies."

Minimum temperatures have ranged from -2 to -7 degrees since the start of June.

Overnight temperatures had been below the long-term average of 1 degree for the month, but on Monday night the sub-zero spell is forecast to break.

"This extended spell of cool morning is reasonably unusual for this time of year," she said.

"It's usually not this early or this long."

Ms Westcott said mild relief wouldn't last long and frost and fog were here to stay.

"Frosty and foggy conditions are still likely on Sunday and Monday and less so on Tuesday," she said.

"But it will return very quickly again on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday."
