Would you do the right thing?

WHAT would you do if someone dropped their wallet right in front of you? While most people would hand it straight back, for young children it’s not that simple.

In a hidden camera-style video for Japan’s Red Cross Society, young children are taken to a bus stop by their mother, who then asks them to wait while she steps away for a few moments.

A nearby stranger then ‘drops’ their wallet in front of the child, prompting confused looks — and clearly much internal debate.

We won’t spoil the ending for you. Watch the video for yourself below.

According to Japan Today, it’s part of the ‘Cross Now!’ initiative, which aims to “create greater awareness of the way our interactions with others, especially those we have the power to help, shape our communities, societies, and world”.

The experiment has particular significance in Japan, where people tend to mind their own business in public. “A classmate dropped their wallet while visiting Japan,” Reddit user shutupnavi wrote. “Came back the following day with it in the same spot, with chalk drawn around it and stickers pointing at it.”

Japan Today explains: “For the most part, Japanese society stresses being considerate and courteous. [Ninety-nine] times out of 100, that makes Japan a great place to live, but in certain situations those virtues can be taken to such extremes they actually end up contrary to their original sentiments.

“[In] rare instances that bit of well-meaning deference can get warped into not getting involved in other people’s affairs even when they’re clearly in a quandary.”
