HOMES designed to embrace the love of all things coastal are often grouped under the rather mundane umbrella term “beach houses”.

In Hot Homes this week we check out three entirely different, individually aspirational homes that are designed to hug the golden Australian coastline, and offer lucky owners a dream lifestyle.

What we weren’t prepared for was to discover the mould-breaking home known as The Edge, a futuristic, space-age designed home that elevates the concept of coastal homes to a new and very exciting level.

Designed by Charles Wright, the same man who created the out-of-this-world Stamp House in the Daintree, The Edge required about 600 cubic metres of concrete in construction materials. Hardly what you would expect for a ‘beach house’.

But this is hardly what you would expect on so many levels — a two-bedroom home on a concrete cantilevered platform with views framed in such a way as to make them almost explosive.

Mr Wright said the design process for the home involved several complicated considerations, including the site itself, positioned as it is in front of a local tourist outlook.

“There were height limits, so a tall structure was not an option here. And the family were keen to maintain their privacy,” he said. The result is a wide screen, focused view of the vibrant coastline framed in muted tones of concrete and ceramics.

Another consideration in the design, according to Mr Wright, was the impact of the house on the natural landscape.

“The design is sensitive to its green backdrop,” he said. “ It is a subtle element.”

Indeed, when viewed from a distance, which is almost the only way to view the home considering the steep terrain, the structure is barely a ripple on the organic landscape.

As a contrast to this futurist creation, Hot Homes also reviews a retro revived property over looking the dynamic stretch of Whale Beach in NSW and another unique home, with an internal river system, on millionaire’s row in Sovereign Island, Queensland.
