A man charged over the shooting of a young woman in Melbourne's north on Friday morning has not applied for bail.

Paul Bazouni, 37, of Northcote, has been charged with one count each of recklessly causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury and being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

A 22-year-old woman is in a serious condition in hospital after being shot in the leg in the early hours of the morning.

The victim was found with gunshot injuries to her upper thigh after police were called to a house behind Joe's Organic Market on Victoria Road, Northcote, about 4.30am.

The market is owned by Mr Bazouni's father.

The woman was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

Mr Bazouni, 37, handed himself in at the St Kilda Road police station just after 3pm on Friday.

He did not come out of the court cells during a brief hearing at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday morning and was remanded in custody to reappear on June 3.
