A 37-year-old man from Tamworth, in northern New South Wales, has been charged with murder following the death of a 52-year-old man after a fight on Friday night.

Steven John Johnson appeared briefly behind the dock of Tamworth Local Court today dressed in a blue jumpsuit with 'forensic services' written on the back.

He's also charged with assault occasioning death.

Police arrested him on Sunday, after executing a search warrant on a Bilkurra Avenue address.

A 38-year-old woman also arrested during the execution of the search warrant was released without charge.

The arrest follows an alleged street fight nearby on Friday night.

Police were called to the address about 7:30pm, where they found a 52-year-old man with a head wound who refused medical treatment.

Police drove him home, but he presented at hospital on Saturday night where it was discovered he had significant internal injuries.

He died a few hours later.

Detectives from Oxley Local Area Command and the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad have formed Strike Force Leasingham to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

The accused didn't apply for bail today and it was formally refused by Magistrate Michael Holmes.

He'll remain behind bars to appear at Court again in June.
