A 15-month-old boy has died from head injuries after he was reportedly hit by a car in a driveway near Ipswich.

Police and paramedics were called to the home in Ripley at about 1.15pm (AEST) today but the toddler died at the scene.

"At this stage it appears the car has reversed over the child causing the fatality," Inspector David Preston said.

It is believed the car involved is government owned and was on official business at the Clarke Street home where the boy's grandmother lives.

The toddler's older siblings were also at the home at the time but it is not yet known if they witnessed the tragic accident.

Neighbours told 9NEWS the boy was always "happy-go-lucky" and "very happy".

The female driver is being treated at Ipswich Hospital for shock.

Police are preparing a report for the Coroner.
