Former Miss Universe Australia Campbell dropped the surprise news on Instagram on Sunday, posting: “I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with you. There are no words to describe how happy we are ... #ENGAGED.”

The post was framed with a picture of Campbell, 23, and Sydney Swans superstar Franklin, 27.

Celebrity manager Sharon Finnigan, who looks after Franklin and Campbell, did not respond to requests for comment, but posted her own message on social media.

Her tribute preceded a flood of congratulations from the couple’s celebrity friends, singers and fashion models.

“Congratulations, gorgeous girl,” WAG and weather girl Rebecca Judd said on Instagram.

Popular television presenter and singer David Campbell seconded those emotions with: “Much love and happiness to you both.”

Model Laura Dundovic said: “So excited for you two.”

The announcement comes 14 months after Campbell confirmed they were a couple — on Instagram.

It also follows a magazine interview last month where Campbell said Franklin made her feel sexy.

“I’ve never associated myself with the word sexy until being with Buddy,” Campbell told the magazine.

“I’ve always been sporty and tomboyish – I wasn’t the pretty girl at school. Now, being in a relationship where I’m supported on every level, I’ve come into myself.”

Campbell said she hoped to be a mother one day.

“In five years time, I want to build my business and also be in a position to start a family,” she said.

A year ago, Campbell said in another interview she knew Franklin was “the one”.

Her feelings were confirmed after she took the AFL bad boy home to meet her family.

“It’s the first time I have felt strongly enough about someone that I wanted my parents to meet him,” she said. “I was never going to bring home someone I was just dating or someone I was having a fling with.”

Franklin and TV presenter Campbell have had high-profile romances in the past. Buddy dated model Kasia Z, and Campbell went out with model Jordan Stenmark.
