EVERYONE has that television show they’re hooked on, that they’d never dream of missing for anything in the world.
For some, it’s a popular franchise that everyone’s talking about, while for others it’s a hidden guilty pleasure not suitable for public discussion.
What did some of our biggest stars watch this year?
With so many programs to choose from across the genres of drama, comedy, reality and documentary, a host of big names lift the lid on their secret — and occasionally shameful — TV addictions.
“For me, The Voice was the must-watch show of the year. My kids love it and I enjoy nothing more than sitting down with the whole family to watch it together. You never know what new talent is about to be unearthed.â€
Bonnie Sveen — Home and Away, Channel Seven
“The Gods Of Wheat Street was my favourite for 2014. It drew me in and cradled my heart, dealing with sadness and grief with a resilient humour. I especially loved the radiant, refreshing performances of Lisa Flanagan, Ursula Yovich and Shari Sebbens. The supernatural themes were totally up my alley.â€
Alex Perry — Australia’s Next Top Model, FOX 8
“I can’t believe I’m saying this ... but here goes. It’s The Real Housewives Of New Jersey. I’m completely addicted to this car crash monster of a show. I know I shouldn’t pick it as my number one, but it’s the only thing I get bent out of shape over if I miss it. I know, I know — therapy please!â€
Carrie Bickmore — The Project, Channel Ten
“Masterchef is always on in my household because my seven-year-old boy Ollie is obsessed. But my late-night binge this year was House of Cards. I was hooked from the first episode. When I thought it couldn’t get any darker it did!â€
Samantha Armytage — Sunrise, Channel Seven
“Million Dollar Minute. I’ve been hooked on the show ever since Sunrise played a game … and I won, in case anyone has forgot! I watch it while I make my dinner.â€
Karl Stefanovic — Today, Channel Nine
“True Detective was incredible, unmissable television. Matthew McConaughey was extraordinary. Game of Thrones was a close second for me.â€
Danielle Cormack — Wentworth, SoHo
“Transparent is the breakout series for me this year. It’s all in the title — a family inherits a mother after their father decides to live as a woman. The lead character is beautifully played by Jeffrey Tambor. Messing with gender concepts and exploring sex and intimacy, not to mention the performances, makes for utterly watchable TV.â€
Virginia Gay — Winners & Losers, Channel Seven
“Upper Middle Bogan and It’s A Date — both are superbly written, gloriously acted and impeccably produced comedies that make me super proud of Aussie TV. This is international-standard, perfect-deadpan and hilarious comedy.â€
Brooke Satchwell — Wonderland, Channel Ten
“Through winter, my escapism came in the belated discovery of Breaking Bad. The storytelling was beyond magnificent, both visually and in the deep-seeded texture of each character. I also discovered The Killing. I started wearing hoodies and am convinced that Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman are the best on screen duo since Mulder and Scully. Those who have seen it will understand both those points — I think.â€
Marty Smiley — The Riff, Channel [V]
“House Of Cards — I’ve never binged on a series faster than I did on that. Power, money, greed, sex, deception and Kevin Spacey. I’ve become addicted to all of them.â€
Amanda Keller — The Living Room, Channel Ten
“I love to watch Would I Lie To You. It’s got all my favourite British comedians — David Mitchell, Lee Mack and Rob Brydon. They make up ridiculous stories and then try to defend them. It’s the perfect panel show.â€
Arianwen Parkes-Lockwood — A Place To Call Home, coming to Foxtel
“My absolute favourite show this year was Please Like Me. Josh Thomas is such a lovable comedic genius. Judi Farr as Aunty Peg is so delightful. I have such respect for her as an actress — and really the whole show is full of characters I love spending time with.â€
Leigh Sales — 7.30, ABC
“Veep — I regularly had to pause this while watching because I was laughing so hard that I couldn’t hear. The writing is stellar and the comic timing of the whole cast is flawless.â€
Ksenija Lukich — E! News Australia, E!
“I think Orange Is The New Black is an incredible and edgy series that had me absolutely addicted. I love all the quirky characters. It’s just brilliant!â€
Eddie McGuire — Hot Seat, Channel Nine
“House of Cards — wonderful acting, great script, political intrigue, ambition, skulduggery, loyalty, betrayal … and that’s just Frank Underwood!â€
