SOME things are meant to be – and the love of Hung Nguyen and Xuan Luu is one of those things.

For the Greystanes couple to be together, Hung’s dad had to survive the Vietnam War, and both families had to survive the boat journey from Vietnam to Australia.

Mr Xuan says it was faith that brought them together.

“Our families migrated to Australia from Vietnam when we were young,” the 28-year-old banker says.

“We were both living fairly close to each other in Petersham and Marrickville, but we never crossed paths.

“It is faith that brought us together, because so many things had to go right for us to eventually cross paths and to be together.”

THE pair met in February of 2011, at a time when their mutual friends were getting married the following month.

“I was asked by my friend to be the maid of honour, and Hung was asked by his friend to be the best man,” she says.

“We didn’t know each other up until that point, but agreed to meet up to organise their wedding speech.

“After the wedding we went our separate ways, despite enjoying each other’s company. About nine months later we started seeing each other a little more when our friends organised group outings, and on Australia Day of 2012 we started officially dating.

“We dated for about 11 months and then Hung proposed. It was really quick, but it just felt right.”

She says Hung, a 30-year-old Software Test Analyst, proposed in December 2012 at Darling Harbour – the place he had first asked her out.

“We went out for dinner and he sat me down under the fairy lights and passed me the leather-bound book,” she says.

“Every page of the book began with ‘remember the time when…’ and each page recorded and retold our love story.

“The last page said ‘remember the time when I ask you to marry me?... and you said….?’ – and Hung got to his knee and asked me if I wanted to grow old with him.”

The pair was married on May 3 at Holroyd Garden, with a reception for 330 people at Crystal Palace.

“We had a traditional Vietnamese tea ceremony in the morning, it was the coldest and windiest day in autumn but we still managed to have so much fun,” she says.

“We pretty much planned and styled everything ourselves so it felt very personal.

“We had a few close relatives come up from Melbourne to celebrate with us, so that was really nice, and at the reception, the highlight was during the wedding games when everyone got involved in the musical chairs.”

THEY had a candy bar and photo booth for guests, with soft tone colours such as pastel peach giving the feel of the simple and elegant wedding of Xuan’s dreams.

“I love Hung for his smile, and for all the faces he pulls, just to make me laugh,” she says.

“I love that we have easy moments and crazy moments – but we are always comfortable enough to be ourselves.

“Hung is my best friend and my soulmate.”
