THERE’S a week left until Christmas. You haven’t bought presents for anyone and are freaking out. What do you do?
Whether you want to spend a little or a lot, if it’s for that guy you know that just won’t grow up or just someone who loves their technology, here’s some top picks.
If you don’t want to spend a lot
Jawbone UP Move — $69 — Fitness trackers are all the rage at the moment, and Jawbone’s latest is dirt cheap and does everything you need. It is water resistant, way more comfy than an UP24 and works just the same with the Jawbone app for much less money, allowing you to track all your exercise and movements throughout the day.
PlayStation TV — $149 — This is either for someone who has a PlayStation 4 and multiple TVs or just the casual gamer who doesn’t want to drop lots of money on a PS4 or Xbox One.
The PS TV lets you stream what’s happening on your PS4 to another TV, which is super handy if you start playing in the living room and decide you want to keep playing in bed. It also plays old PS1 games and PS Vita games that you can download from the store on it.
Portable battery charger — $20-$100 — Portable battery chargers are a Godsend when your phone or tablet runs out of juice while you’re out of the house. Ranging in size and price, they can charge your phone or tablet just the once or several times before needing to be plugged in again.
Parrot Minidrone Rolling Spider — $139 — The Rolling Spider minidrone is just a lot of fun. It’s perfect for someone’s first drone, or someone who loves remote control anything. It’s controlled using an app on your iPhone or Android device, and its big detachable wheels let it climb on walls and roofs.
NERF guns — $20+ — These are the ultimate big kids toy. Starting at a small handgun like to big rifles, these foam bullet firing toys are loved by (mostly) males everywhere. Try the N-Stike Elite Demolisher. It fires off the foam bullets quickly and also has a bigger one you can pump off. Loads of fun for Christmas Day skirmishes.
If you want to spend a bit more
Bose Quiet Comfort 25 headphones — $399 — These are great all-purpose headphones. They sound good in every situation, they look great and are extremely comfortable whether it be on the plane, office or train.
LG G3 smartphone — $449 — LG’s latest flagship handset was the best Android phone on the market until the Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 and Huawei Ascend Mate 7 were released last month. It’s now much cheaper than most flagships, boasts a great camera, fantastic screen and has one of the better designs of any Android phone this year.
Samsung M3 speaker — $269 — The M3 is one of Samsung’s three models in its rally on wireless speakers. It’s an attractive wedge design that happily and easily connects to your bluetooth music device. Despite its size, it’s quite loud and packs in a great amount of bass and clarity. You can even buy several of them to put throughout the house and have the same song playing through all.
Apple iPad Mini 2 — $369+ — At $369, the iPad Mini 2 is the best value tablet you can buy. It looks great, performs brilliantly and Apple’s tablet App Store has a lot better offerings than Android’s. Don’t worry about the newer iPad Mini 3, it’s essentially the exact same tablet but with a fancy fingerprint sensor that will set you back an extra $100.
Razor Crazy Cart — $599 — The Crazy Cart is my favourite anything I have played with in 2014. It’s an electric powered go kart that let’s you drift like a pro just by pulling a lever. It’s a bit pricey, but the fun you have is well worth it.
LG G Watch R Smartwatch — $359 — Smartwatches have had nearly two years on the market now, but it wasn’t until the G Watch R and Motorola’s 360 were announced that they actually started looking like watches. The G Watch R is actually a smartwatch you will want to wear. Aside from looking good, it runs Android Wear which means you can get turn by turn GPS on your wrist and notifications from all your important apps. Unfortunately it’s only compatible with Android devices.
If you want to spend a lot
A 4K TV — $999+ — Forget Full-HD TVs, you need a 4K TV. These guys are four times as clear as traditional full high def TVs and are the only ones to buy if you’re looking to get something that you will want for a few years. You can get some cheaper ones from around $1000 from the likes of Kogan and LG all the way up to over $10,000 for high end LG and Samsung sets. We recommend either the 65-inch curved UHD Series 9 Samsung model or the LG’s 65-inch curved 4K set — both for around the $5000 mark.
iPhone 6 Plus — $999+ — We gave the iPhone 6 Plus the best phone of 2014 for good reason. It has the best camera of any smartphone out this year, great battery life and a fantastic display. iOS is used well on the big screen, and iOS app quality is general still higher than that of Android. If money is no problem and you’re looking to get a new phone, definitely consider the iPhone 6 Plus. Just make sure you don’t get the 16GB model.
Samsung Galaxy Note 4/Edge $899/$1188 — Samsung was the original big phone maker, and it still does it well. The Note 4 and Note Edge have the best screens we have ever seen on a smartphone, everything pops out and looks completely gorgeous. The Edge has a curved screen that drops off the side, allowing a separate panel on the side of the phone that you can use for notifications, an app drawer and night clock just to name a few. It’s fast, the stylus is easy to use and the camera, while not as good as the iPhone’s is still one of the best on the market.
