A bewildered Australia captain Steve Smith says his side had absolutely no problem with the Gabba practice wickets that had India so enraged they lodged an official complaint.

The tourists have been accused of petty bitching and whinging for releasing an official statement which slammed the state of the decks as the cause of two batsmen suffering injuries before Saturday’s play.

Respected Brisbane curator Kevin Mitchell hit back, claiming no other touring team has ever had a problem with the standard of the net facilities and he received resounding support from Test great Ian Chappell and current Australian fast bowler Ryan Harris.

Smith appeared shocked that there was an issue with the pitches he regards as world class.

“None of our players had any problems with those wickets,” he said.

“They’re very good practice wickets. They emulate pretty much what you get out in the middle.

“That’s what you want at your playing ground.

“I don’t think any of our players had any problems with them whatsoever.

In the first off-field flashpoint of the series so far, opener Shikhar Dhawan was unable to resume his innings at the start of play as a result of being struck on the right wrist while warming up.

David Warner has only managed six runs on day four of the second Test against India after injuring his thumb early in Australia's innings.

Star batsman Virat Kohli, who came to the crease in Dhawan’s place, was also hit on the left arm in warm-up, prompting the BCCI to release a scathing statement criticising the Gabba for failing to obey their request for fresh practice wickets.

However, India’s argument later appeared to be an over-reaction after Dhawan returned to the field to score a fluent 81.

It also emerged Kohli might have suffered his knock facing innocuous throw-downs rather than net bowlers.

Indian captain MS Dhoni said the last-minute decision to send Kohli out instead of Dhawan at the start of play was disruptive to the dressing room and admitted the Gabba needed to address their facilities.

Australia have taken a 2-nil series lead after defeating India in the second Test on day four at the Gabba.

“It can be improved. I don’t really want to create a controversy but it can certainly be improved,” he said.

“It caused a bit of unrest. Not a typhoon coming unrest, but the calmness of the dressing room goes.”

Chappell blasted India’s lack of leadership.

“That’s the sort of thing you might bitch about in the dressing room,” Chappell told Channel Nine.

Chappell said a strong skipper would tell his players to stop their complaining and get on with it.

“You don’t go putting out a statement about it,” Chappell said.

“When you come out with a statement like that, particularly after you’ve lost a few wickets in the morning, it looks like whingeing.”

The dramatic failure of Dhawan to come out and bat in the morning caught confused commentators by surprise, but Mitchell Johnson took full advantage – ripping through the Indian top order to spark a crippling collapse.

The BCCI decided to blame the Gabba.

India captain MS Dhoni fronts the media after his side's second Test loss to Australia at the Gabba.

“The Indian team has been asking for the fresh net practice wickets several times for last two days which has not been provided,” their statement read.

“Instead of that, they have asked to practice on worn out wickets which have uneven bounce. Because of that two of our batsmen got injured this morning.

“One of the two batsmen, Shikhar Dhawan, had a right wrist injury. Because of that he was unable to bat in the morning. He is being examined by our physio and we will assess his fitness in sometime.”

David Warner has only managed six runs on day four of the second Test against India after injuring his thumb early in Australia's innings.

Curator Mitchell said India might be upset, but they were never going to be granted access to fresh wickets being prepared for a BBL game next week.

”The practice wickets are fine,’’ said Mitchell.

“They wear just like a match pitch does and reflect what is happening in the middle.

We have never had a complaint from another touring team.

Brendon Julian and Ben Way rreview the second Test which saw Australia take a 2-0 series lead against India.

“They wanted to use practice wickets (prepared) for the Brisbane Heat but those wickets are not ready because they are for a training session on the 23rd (Tuesday).”

All Australian players have found the nets perfectly fine and veteran quick Harris batted in the nets the same morning and was more than happy with their condition.

Despite their complaints, India have requested a training session scheduled for those same nets at the Gabba on Sunday afternoon.
