STEVE Smith has become just the fifth Australian in the last 100 years — and ninth over all — to score a century on Test debut as a captain, with a brilliant innings at the Gabba.
He is the youngest Australian batsman to achieve the feat.
Only Billy Murdoch (1880), Harry Trott (1896), Monty Noble (1903), Clem Hill (1910), Warwick Armstrong (1920), Lindsay Hassett (1949), Greg Chappell (1975) and Graham Yallop (1978) had scored a century on captaincy debut for Australia prior to Smith.
LIVE BLOG: SECOND TEST, DAY THREE
Smith’s innings was the highest by an Australian captain on debut since Armstrong’s 158 in 1920. It is equal with Noble’s effort in 1903 as the equal-fifth highest score by an Australian captain on debut.
Yallop was the last Australian batsman to reach triple figures in his first Test as skipper, 36 years ago. He was immediately preceded by Greg Chappell, who remains the only Aussie captain to score a ton in both innings of his first Test as captain.
Smith was named Australia’s 45th Test captain on Monday in place of the injured Michael Clarke. He is Australia’s third youngest captain after Ian Craig (1957) and Kim Hughes (1979).
Smith has scored 912 runs at 82.90 in his eighth Test this year, including four centuries and four 50s.
That contrasts favourably with his previous 16 Tests, during which he scored 970 runs at 34.64. He managed just two centuries in that time.
Smith’s career average had sky rocketed to 48.25 after the first session on Friday.
