ABC 7.30 host Leigh Sales won the internet overnight after poking fun at the “spectacular screw up” which saw soon-to-be The Project co-host Waleed Aly mistaken for comedian Nazeem Hussain.

In an embarrassing blunder on Wednesday, Fairfax Media inserted a caption of Aly in a TV column with the line: “Waleed Aly joins The Project”.

Aly has been a regular panellist on the show but after Rove McManus’ departure at the end of the year, the co-host seat has been up for grabs. Aly’s announcement was made last week.

But instead of using Aly’s picture, a photo of SBS’ Legally Brown star Hussain was used instead.

Aly’s appointment marks a historic debut for Australian television; he is the first Muslim to co-host a live, primetime television show.

Enter 7.30 host Leigh Sales, who last night tweeted her temptation to introduce the program with this corker.

The tweet was then met with a host of pleads from the audience.

So, did she do it? (Click the sound icon on the top left screen for audio).

Meanwhile, Sales wasn’t the only one to poke fun at the multicultural mishap.

The Guardian Australia’s Brigid Delaney posted a series of photos based on Aly with laugh-out-loud captions in her weekly media wrap, the Weekly Beast.
