JOSH Hazlewood has made a spectacular debut to his Test career, taking five wickets for Australia against India at the Gabba in Brisbane.
Here are six things you didn’t know about the 23-year-old phenomenon.
1. HE IS NO STRANGER TO BREAKING RECORDS
Back in 2010, a 19-year-old Hazlewood become the youngest player to debut for Australia in a one-day international. Two years earlier, at 17, he became the youngest bowler to be selected by NSW. Today he became the 33rd Australian to take a five-wicket haul on his Test debut.
2. LARRIKIN PUNTERS MADE $50,000 EACH OUT OF HIS DEBUT
Almost nine years ago, a group of punters from the bush backed the then-teenage fast bowler from the tiny country town of Bendemeer, NSW, at odds of $500-1 to play Test cricket before his 30th birthday. According to The Courier-Mail’s Ben Dorries, each punter had a $100 bet and stood to each collect $50,000 from British bookmakers.
3. HE SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF JUNIOR CRICKETERS
Hazlewood’s junior cricket coach Mick Shelton tells it like this: “He got five in a row and the last kid hobbled off after Josh hit him on the toe. Josh probably would have got six wickets in a row but the last kid was too scared and wouldn’t go out to bat.â€
4. HIS MIDDLE NAME IS REGINALD
That’s up there with his new captain Steve Smith’s middle name of Devereux.
5. HIS IDOL WILL COME AS NO SURPRISE
The great Glenn McGrath — who he is often compared to — was his boyhood hero. Fittingly, McGrath presented Hazlewood with his Test cap on debut.
6. HE WAS A GUN AT DISCUS AND SHOTPUT
At 10 years old, he won gold in both his discus and shotput events at the National Primary Schools Athletic Championships in Melbourne. Proof he always had a good arm.
