Former Australian Idol winner Wes Carr says he is humbled at the response to the raw, emotional song he wrote quickly after the tragic Sydney siege.

Carr posted a clip of himself singing I Pray, with the lyrics, on Facebook on Tuesday, hours after the siege ended in the deaths of two hostages and the gunman. The song has been shared more than 13,500 times and attracted universal support on social media, notwithstanding a few snickering cynical quips.

While I Pray is no Imagine, it's a genuine and heartfelt attempt by Carr to reconcile the events of Monday and Tuesday that he has not tried to financially benefit from. Instead it is his personal response to the tragedy and a plea for tolerance in the aftermath.

After the song received huge support on social media Carr wrote on Wednesday: "I am so deeply humbled my song I Pray has resonated with so many ... we all need to find peace within ourselves and speak more of LOVE and HOPE than to live in fear and anger [sic]."

Carr won Australian Idol in 2008 but has kept a low profile from mainstream music since, recently deciding to perform as Buffalo Tales.

I PRAY LYRICS BY WES CARR

There ain't no God,
That will play,
With your fear, evil and hate
There ain't no God,
That will discriminate,
You can't fight hatred with hate.

I will walk with you
If you want me to
I will not try to understand it
That only leads to judgement

And I pray
For the 15 people that were locked in that cafe
For their families and for change
For that gunman who was lead astray
But his own fear, evil and hate
And I pray
For the lives lost in that sydney cafe
For their families and for change
For the gunman who was lead astray
By his own fear, evil and hate

This has nothing to do with religion
It's one mans madness and confusion
It doesn't matter if your Christian Buddhist Atheist or Muslim
We are all ONE type of human
We are all Love
Unconditional love
Let's get together and love
Got to remember love
We are all Love
Unconditional love

I will walk with you
If you want me to
I will not try to understand it
That only leads to judgement

And I pray
For the 15 people that were locked in that cafe
For their families and for change
For that gunman who was lead astray
But his own fear, ego and hate
And I pray
For the lives lost in that sydney cafe
For their families and for change
For the gunman who was lead astray
By his own fear evil and hate

We are all Love
Got to remember love
Unconditional love
We are all love.
