TELSTRA is teaming up with Tesla to give free internet connectivity in every Model S in Australia. That means while your car is going from 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds, you could be downloading from 0-42Mbps in less than one.
Why would a car need free internet you ask? Well, the Tesla Model S isn’t a normal car. It’s essentially a computer that you sit in while you drive. Really fast. The car’s dash is completely digital, and its centre console is a 17-inch tablet that controls everything. We mean everything. From the air con and music to the GPS and even suspension height. The car even gets software and firmware updates.
Telstra’s new deal will allow the Model S to have coverage for its internet radio, in-built Google Maps and web browser wherever you get Telstra Next G connection. On top of that, it will also work as an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot for those travelling inside.
The connection will connect Tesla owners to the Tesla app when they’re away from the car. This allows them to do things like unlock or lock the doors and even turn the air conditioning on so the car is nice and cold when you get inside.
The best part however, is that it allows Tesla technicians to remotely check on your car if something has gone wrong and diagnose the problem. They can even fix some problems via an over-the-air firmware update.
Pretty neat if you have a spare $100,000 to fork out for the car.
