THE Bachelor’s Sam Frost has opened up about her tough upbringing as she watched her mum struggle with mental illness.
The 25-year-old used her very first post on her new blog The Language Of Sam to open up about her mum’s Debbie’s experience with eating disorders, depression and emphysema.
In the touching post, Frost said her mum struggled when her parents separated when she was three-years-old, forcing her to work two jobs to support her four children while “working through her long battle with anorexia & bulimiaâ€.
Two years later her mum met her step-dad Paul, who she credits as the man who “still continues to inspire to me everyday†and her family’s “saving graceâ€.
Her mother welcomed two more sons with Paul.
But when he had a stroke and died at the age of 55, her mum’s health spiralled out of control.
“Unfortunately his passing, took it’s toll on my beautiful mum,†Frost wrote. “It triggered her depression once again and she quickly spiralled into a very dark place. In hindsight, we should have sought help at the point. But we didn’t.
“I am the first person to admit the shameful truth, I was too scared & embarrassed to put up my hand and say, we need help!
“It wasn’t until a year later, mums mental health had only become worse, almost to the point of no return. I would see mum and couldn’t even recognise her, she looked different, she acted different. She was only skin & bones. It was very confronting seeing the woman you look up to and inspire to be, in this toxic state of mind.â€
Frost says she then called Beyond Blue who gave her the right steps to move forward and help her mum get back on her feet.
“It takes an incredible person to continuously find strength through dark times,†Sam adds. “I couldn’t be prouder of her for never giving up.â€
Her mother has since remarried.
Frost says she will be putting on fundraiser events for The Stroke Foundation & Beyond Blue next year and has invited her fans to make a donation via https://strokefoundation.com.au/donate/
